WBC junior welterweight champion Erik Morales (52-7, 36 KOs) sat ringside on Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles, and watched Antonio DeMarco (26-2-1, 19 KOs) come from behind to stop Jorge Linares in the eleventh round. DeMarco captured the vacant WBC lightweight title.
Morales, who defends his title for the first time on December 10th in Mexico, will attempt to shave off a few pounds to pursue a title at 135-pounds. BoxingScene.com had initially reported how Morales, a four division world champion, wanted a fifth divisional belt, and saw the DeMarco-Linares winner as the perfect fit.
At the start of the 2012, Morales will examine if it's even possible for him to make the lightweight limit. Once his body confirms the capability of a five pound drop, he plans to get more serious in his pursuit of DeMarco.
"It was a genuine war. Linares allowed the advantage that he had from the very the very beginning to slip away. Annd DeMarco never surrendered. We are going to take a look [at a fight with DeMarco. My four [divisional] titles, I won them against Mexican [opponents], so I think DeMarco meets the criteria," Morales told Sal Rodriguez.
