Former four division world champion Erik Morales (52-9, 36KOs) will be honored by the World Boxing Organiztion. The sanctioning body wants to hold a ceremony in Morales' hometown of Tijuana and present him with a specially made WBO belt.
Morales captured the WBO super bantamweight title in his first violent war with Marco Antonio Barrera on February 19, 2000. Morales never defended the title and moved up to featherweight two fights later. The first fight with Barrera was the first and only time that Morales had fought with a WBO championship at stake.
The Mexican veteran, 37-years-old, plans to have two more fights before officially announcing his retirement.
"I've always had great respect for Erik Morales because he is one of the great Mexican boxing champions of all time. I've always admired him for his high quality," said WBO President Paco Valcarcel.
