Jose Morales, father and trainer of Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KOs), is very angry with Saturday's decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After twelve rounds of boxing, Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs) was given the victory with a majority decision. Two judges saw it 116-112 for Maidana, and the third had it scored as a 114-114 draw.
Morales was trying to become the first Mexican to win a fourth world title in a fourth weight division. The interim-WBA 140-pound title was up for grabs in the fight with Maidana. In 2007, Morales tried to accomplish the same achievement with David Diaz, who at the time was the WBC lightweight champion. Diaz won a close twelve round decision, but many felt Morales had done enough to get the victory.
Jose is angry with some of the tactics that were used by Maidana in the fight.
"This was the second time that my son was robbed in a fight for his fourth world championship. The first time it was against David Diaz in Chicago, and now here. I issued a warning several weeks ago, that Maidana's trainer Rudy Perez would teach him the same bad habits that were used by Marco Antonio Barrera. Maidana was hitting him to the back of his head and only trying to win rounds in the final ten seconds," Jose Morales said.
