Former three division champion Erik Morales is "expecting a war" when he steps in the ring with WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez on April 16 in Las Vgeas. It has yet to be established if Morales will challenge Marquez for his titles, or Marquez is planning to go up to the junior welterweight division to face Morales for his WBC silver title.
"This will be a great fight. It's a very big fight for Mexico. I will train very hard to prepare," Morales said.
Morales has been looking to fight Marquez for a long time. There were discussions about a Marquez-Morales bout when both boxers were under Top Rank. It never happened because of financial reasons. There were reports that Marquez requested a lot of money at the time.
At the present, the bout is reportedly close to a deal. In 2010, Morales returned after a near three year layoff from boxing. He stayed active since coming back with wins over Willie Limond, Jose Alfaro and Francisco Lorenzo. Marquez had a rougher year with tough fights against Juan Diaz and Michael Katsidis.
