Promoter Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde Jr has asked WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman for a review of the fight between WBC International super flyweight champion Sylvester Lopez and Juan “Goofy” Montes in a WBC super flyweight eliminator last October 2 in Mexico.
Montes won by a 5th round technical decision following what referee Frank Gentile ruled was a clash of heads in round three which opened up a nasty gash over the right eyebrow of Montes . The fight was stopped in the fifth with the Mexican in no position to continue because of the cut for which Lopez was deducted a point.
However, a report in boxrec.com claimed the cut was caused by legal blows. At the same time Elorde offered Montes a rematch in Manila.
Elorde claimed that in the October 2 fight which served as a WBC super flyweight final eliminator, the ruling that Lopez was knocked down in the first round was incorrect. Elorde said a review of the tape showed that “the left hand punch was not a legal blow. The tape will show that it was an illegal rabbit punch to the neck followed by a push.”
Elorde told Sulaiman “I would like to ask you for a rematch on December 4,2010 at which I am prepared to promote this fight in the Philippines for US$20,000net tax free and three air tickets for Goofy Montes and with all three neutral judges.”
At the same time he said “we hope the winner of this rematch will fight Tomas Rojas for the WBC super flyweight championship.”
Sulaiman responded by stating that he had no authority “just days before the WBC Convention for any ruling” which he said “ must come from the Convention .” Sulaiman said he would take a DVD to the Convention “where a decision will be taken.”
The WBC president noted that the ratings committee has kept Lopez in the No. 2 position which he held before the Montes fight.”
