If everything falls into place, we could see a possible fall bout between unbeaten lightweight puncher Edwin Valero and WBC super featherweight champion Humberto Soto. Valero fights on April 4 against Antonio Pitalua for the vacant WBC lightweight title in San Antonio, Texas. Soto returns on Saturday in Tijuana, Mexico against Antonio Davis. Both fighters are promoted by Top Rank.
During a recent interview with BoxingScene.com, Top Rank's Bob Arum told Luis Sandoval that a fight between Valero and Soto was possible for later in the year.
"I would like to put [Soto] in with Juan Manuel Marquez. There is a great fight on April 4 with Edwin Valero fighting Pitalua. Soto could fight the winner of that fight," Arum said.
Soto, one of the more underrated fighters in the sport, told BoxingScene that if he can't land the right fight at super featherweight, he would move up to lightweight to find better opportunities.
"We're thinking about unifying some titles, but if not then we will go up to 135 and look for big fights there," Soto said.
