San Juan, Puerto Rico was a long way from the friendly confines of Oklahoma casinos for Tulsa native Allan "Sweetness" Green. Green (23-1) challenged tough Edison "Pantera" Miranda (27-1) in a 162 pound bout that was hardly the "knock down, drag out" battle that all the pre-fight hype promised.
Green entered the ring to a chorus of boos and seemed to lack his usual ferocity, rarely dealing out the tools of his winning arsenal- the left hook or significant jabs.
Noticeable to Jim Lampley at ringside was Green’s habit of looking at his feet after he throws combinations, something that becomes more frequent as his fights go further in distance. Studying the canvas in this fashion provided him no answers as Miranda was consistently the busier fighter, and was willing to try and get a fight started with the usually aggressive Green.
Miranda made up for finesse by employing all out aggression. He was able to weather the storm of Green’s single punch attacks to gain the unanimous decision, although at times he was troubled by Green’s rolling defense and unable to land his dangerous trademark right as often or as effectively.
Round 8, Green seemed to shed some of his reluctance to engage in a fight and was able to score a knockdown. Even with suffering the knockdown, Miranda was well ahead on the scorecards. In round 10 Miranda decided to let his killer instinct take over. Stunning Green with the heavy right hand, he chased his dazed opponent across the ring to try and deliver the knockout. Green literally hung on for dear life as the tenth round drew to a close, Miranda’s trunks going to his knees as Green made every effort to survive.
Miranda punctuated the victory by putting Green on the canvas two times as the tenth round drew to a close.
I said from the beginning that Allan Green could very well lose to Edison Miranda and it could become a brutal fight. He did lose, but it wasn't that brutal of a bout. Now I wonder as Green has tasted his first defeat, where does this leave him in hopes of facing Jermain Taylor or Winky Wright???
