Edgar Sosa’s sixth WBC Light Flyweight defense, held in Mexico City’s Arena, was all going according to plan, until Sonny Boy Jaro dropped him with a big left-right combination in the ninth round.

Edgar got up without a count, but his mouth guard had flown, so a few seconds elapsed until it was replaced. Obviously shaken, hurt, and as pale as a sheet, Edgar used his boxing brain and excellent physical condition to back pedal, until the crisis passed and he was in the driver's seat again.

Edgar had used his height and reach advantage to set up combinations all night behind a left jab, which was almost as regular as the Greenwich Time signal. That is until he got clocked.

Sonny Boy who’d promised to go for a knockout got caught time and again, by many well timed flurries, and could often only pot shot with single blows. He had somewhat more success in going to the body. He proved his durability, but was beaten by a unanimous decision.

Mexico’s Reyes Sanchez relieved France’s Ali Chebah of his WBC Super lightweight Youth belt and his unbeaten record, with a TKO in 2:08 of the seventh round.

Ali stood with his back against the ropes and soaked up punch after punch, many of which he took on his arms, without firing back in reply. So referee Hector Afu of Panama stopped the fight. Ali, who was not badly hurt was furious. Had he channeled some of that annoyance towards Reyes, things could have been different. Reyes, who’d dyed half of his hair crimson, caught Ali coming in with long straight punches in the early rounds, using his longer reach well. Ali’s heavy hands bloodied Reyes’ nose as early as the third, and Ali had his moments throughout, especially with right hooks, but Reyes fought back well often turning defense into attack. Ali’s attack was exciting, but he constantly held his hands low, and due to a leaky defense got clipped too often.

Mariana Juarez retained her WBC International Flyweight belt with a deserved unanimous decision against Britain’s Suszannah Warner, but she didn’t have things all her own way by any means.

The Brit showed true grit by taking some heavy blows, but firing back until the final bell rang after a ten round war.

Suszannah surprised Mariana with a fast start in round one landing well with the jab, but got caught with a heavy looping right towards the end of the round. Mariana poured the pressure on in round two and a right to the jaw stung Suszannah and then another higher up cut her over the right eye.

Suszannah used ring craft and long straight punches to keep the bigger Mariana at bay and also has some success with uppercuts in the clinches. Mariana’s punches were heavier when they landed, but she took a few to dish them out and ended the fight with a mouse swelling under her right eye. The crowed roared her victory, but also warmly applauded the British girl who put up a very gutsy fight.

Texan heavyweight David Rodriquez ground Andy Sample’s ribcage to made his bread. Sample who seen better days as a cruiserweight just wasn’t big and strong enough to handle the Goliath David. He circled and jabbed for what seemed like only moments until a left and then an even bigger right sank into the pit of his stomach, leaving him gasping on the canvas for some time after 1:13 of the first round when the fight was waved off and the booing started.
