Boxing’s busiest world champion Edgar Sosa says he’d relish a fight with Ivan Calderon.
WBC Light Flyweight Champion Edgar said this following his thirty day weigh in for the fight against Panamanian Carlos Melo. Edgar who weighed in at 54 kilos, comfortably within the category limit, is looking forward to his ninth defense in Vera Cruz on June 20th. All of his defenses have amazingly been packed in, since he won the title on April 14th 2007, by defeating Brian Viloria .
A stalwart of the WBC, Edgar is none the less keen to swap leather with undefeated Ivan Calderon, the WBO’s champ. He confirmed there have been talks but nothing concrete has been agreed upon. And a fight would have to be held on neutral ground, which would probably be Las Vegas.
Turning to Carlos “Shanghai” Melo, who’s ranked eleventh by the WBC, his punching power is pillow-like. He only stopped two of his twenty-four opponents. However, Edgar (35-5, 19 KO’s) says that Melo is fast on his feet and technically slick, which has brought him eighteen wins, and just six defeats. And the key will be catching up with him, but staying in ring trim by fighting often will prove to be a decisive factor. Edgar fought as recently as April 4th in Cuidad Victoria, Tamaulipas, where he polished off Thailand’s Pornsawan Porpramook with a TKO in four overwhelming rounds.
Edgar is planning to chalk up ten successful defenses and move up to the Flyweight Division by the end of this year.
