Only smidgeons of grams separated their tonnage, but the weigh-in between Mexico’s busy Edgar Sosa and Thai challenger Pornsawan Porpramook looked like a tale of two divisions.
This is going to be Edgar’s eighth defense since he showed heart and pummeled Brian Viloria on April 14th 2007. At the weigh in ceremony in Cuidad Victoria, Tamaulipas, sparsely clad Edgar came in close to the button at 49kg 100 grams. While Pornsawan scaled 48.900.
Yet the shorter Edgar looked finely honed, strong and well proportioned, while Pornswan appeared willowy with reed -ike legs. His only two losses on points, have come when he tried to win the strawweight title, one division down.
When introduced Pornswan invariably puts his hands together prayer like and slightly bows. He is a dignified man who’s called Edgar a worthy champion. Yet he’s been more verbally brash in questioning Edgar’s chin, fortitude and stressing that he himself has been preparing more than three months for this fight, plus it’s the best training camp he’s ever had. He’s also stressed that he will be going home with the belt.
Edgar showing cool mint gum chewing distain, has utterly ignored all the breeze, stressing that the quantum difference is going to be the intelligence with which he wins this fight, using patience and marksmanship to carve out an opportunity for himself.
Previously a counter punching specialist, Edgar has shown he can attack well, and has a Ferrari gear when things go wrong, like when he was badly cut in a rough house melee against rugged Filipino Juanito Rubillar.
Edgar, who has worked desperately hard and has made the word busy seem indolent via a whirlwind of ring activity, has become accustomed to the trappings of a world champion. He’s probably got two more fights in him at this weight, before he has to move up. But there’s an icy determination to get the job done….and well, in WBC President Jose Sulaiman’s beloved home City of Victoria.
Before this ceremony there was a visit to a center for people with special needs. The Mayor Arturo Diez Gutierrez Navarro and the WBC will give 300,000 pesos to help these families.
A glittering array of Mexico’s finest including: Jose Napolis, Reuben Olivares, Pipino Cuevas, Lupe Pintor and Alfonso Zamora also bought joy and happiness to the faces, and shining eyes of sick children by visiting and distributing toys at the Hospital Infantil de Tamaulipas.
Sadly the smiling face of Raul Raton Macias, who was a huge favorite with children due to his kind, gentle and down to earth mild manner was, and forever will be missing.
