MEXICO CITY – The handlers of WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa and challenger Juanito Rubillar engaged in a short confrontation about the official weighing scale that will be used in the official weigh-in on Friday.
Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde Jr. asked his counterpart Jacques fils Deschamps to allow his boxer Rubillar to use the scale which he believes was placed in Sosa’s room in the first floor of Hotel Benidorm.
Deschamp immediately denied Elorde’s information and claimed he has no knowledge about the scale.
“I’m not aware of that, it’s not in Edgar’s room, maybe in another room,” said Deschamps. “But how come my boy goes out everyday to check his weight if there's a weigh in scale in his room? It’s not there.”
Elorde then revealed that his reliable source from the Comisión de Box del Distrito Federal (CBDF) had informed him that Sosa had been allowed to personally use the scale.
“It’s normal that boxing commission let their champion to use the scale personally. But what I want is just let my boxer to use it too,” said Elorde, who added there are other people in the hotel that saw somebody bring in the same scale that Rubillar used in Safety Weigh-In held at third floor of Boxeo de Gala gym ni Delegacion Cuauhtemoc.
On Wednesday night, Sosa told this writer that his weight was 111 pounds while after lunch Rubillar revealed he was 108 ½ pounds on his medical scales that he brought from Manila.
Sosa will put his title in the line for seventh straight time in 20 months on Saturday night. It is classified as a mandatory fight against Rubillar, who got his third mandatory crack at the 108-pound title of the WBC after beating former champ Omar Nino with split decision in June, also in Mexico.
