Since he had a metal plate inserted in his cheek to repair a triple fracture from a Rodel Mayol headbutt, which cost him his WBC Light Flyweight title last November, Edgar Sosa has been dubbed Iron Man.
In the final press conference in Mexico City, prior to his Saturday night clash in Mexico City’s Arena against visiting Venezuelan Jose Luis Varela, there was a steel like determination in his manner as the two squared up and stared each other down for the gaggle of photographers.
Edgar is noticeably taller with an appreciably longer reach than his opponent. And he confided that he’s been working on long range punching in his preparations for this fight.
He stressed that he feels appreciably stronger as a fully fledged flyweight, due to less slimming sacrifices, and is looking for a quick win, in the manner of his ring return on June 5th, when he demolished former IBF straw weight champion Roberto Leyva with a decisive whirlwind second round knockout in Acapulco.
Edgar said: “Varela can be dangerous close in, and I’m also going to be very careful of head clashes. I’ve got some experience of them ( ruefully grins). I’m going to punish his body with some precise punches to the liver.”
Edgar’s plan is to have another fight in September and then contest the flyweight title early in 2011.
Jose Luis Varela is pledging he’s going to do his level best to ruin that script. He explained that he’s trained to go the full ten rounds, explaining: “For me this is a great opportunity, and I’m going to take it. Edgar is going to try to fight me at distance. All I’ll say is that it’s going to be a great fight.”
Another fight on the same card to savor, is for the WBC’s Silver belt at bantamweight between Mexico’s Cristian “El Italiano” Esquival and South African Tshifhiwe “The Atomic Spider” Munyai.
Munyai garnered applause from the audience promising he could ko Esquival in any of the twelve rounds. He said he’s box and fight to achieve this.
Esquival who was sporting a white trilby, didn’t keep his opinion under his hat, retorting that it probably won’t go beyond six, which was greeted by more applause and gales of laughter due to its audacity, which was backed up by some barbed smiles and scowls exchanged between the two.
The weigh in will be held at Mexico City’s Angel of Independence.
