Mark Robinson/Matchroom BoxingEddie Hearn and Chris Eubank Jnr could be set to link up with view to making a third fight with Conor Benn, who was of course Hearn’s client for the first two contests.
Should 37-year-old Eubank Jnr, 35-4 (25 KOs), join forces with Hearn and Matchroom it would represent an incredible turnaround.
Eubank outpointed Benn last April before appearing a shadow of himself in the rematch seven months later. Benn levelled the series at 1-1 in a fight so one-sided Eubank did well to hear the final bell.
Both bouts were set at 160lbs and included a 10lb rehydration clause which meant neither fighter could weigh more than 170lbs on the morning of the fight.
With Benn, 25-2 (14 KOs), coming up in weight it was widely perceived that the clause would only be detrimental to the naturally bigger Eubank -and so it proved in the sequel.
Eubank, between those bouts, made his feelings towards Hearn clear to such an extent that Matchroom, alongside the British Boxing Board of Control, began legal proceedings against him.
Benn, while dropping back down to 147lbs, was stopped by Ryan Garcia in two rounds on September 12. Before the contest Benn admitted that making the welterweight limit was so difficult he would be campaigning at 160 or 168lbs in the future.
The Garcia defeat, for the WBC title, was Benn’s second bout for Zuffa Boxing following his shock promotional switch earlier this year.
“Stranger things have happened,” Hearn said about potentially working with Eubank to secure a third fight with 29-year-old Benn.
"I will confirm that I had a very pleasant lunch meeting with Mr Eubank.
"It was nice to clear the air. Certainly, me on Team Eubank against Dana White and Conor Benn makes the fight twice as big, and the trilogy will be interesting.
"But if I'm on Team Eubank, I'll make sure everything's fair this time.
"I think Chris understands and appreciates that my job last time was to get the edge.
"And I did that beautifully, because I spun the other team around my finger, and I enabled Conor Benn to get the advantage going into the fight. That's the game."
Hearn had previously indicated that if he was to work with Eubank he would make a third fight with Benn at 168lbs and there would be no rehydration clause.
