The fast-rising prospect, Eddie Gomez, currently a senior at JFK high school in the Bronx, will fight his first main event on Nov. 18 in San Juan, P.R. as part of a co-promotion between Golden Boy, and Miguel Cotto’s promotional outfit on the Solo Boxeo Tecate boxing series, his attorney, Gabriel Penagaricano told BoxingScene.com.
It’s also his first eight-round bout. An opponent has not yet been named, but if he comes out of the junior middleweight bout unscathed, Gomez (6-0, five knockouts) could see action on the Amir Khan-Lamont Peterson card on Dec. 10 in Washington, D.C., Penagaricano said. Gomez, who is signed with Golden Boy, was also being mentioned as taking part in the Nov. 26 Saul Alvarez vs. Kermit Cintron card in Mexico City, until this opportunity came along, Penagaricano said.
“We may try to get in one more fight for Eddie before the year is up,” Penagaricano said. “As for next year, we want to keep the same pace as we have kept this year, with Eddie maybe fighting six or seven times, but next year, he will be moving up to 10-rounders, and the opponents [will also become tougher].”
Gomez may also drop down to welterweight next year, if his trainer and manager, Jose Cotto Talavera, signs off on the move, Penagaricano added.
