At The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, Bernard Dunne (28-1, 15KOs) finally showed his potential by knocking out Ricardo Cordoba (34-2, 21KOs) in the eleventh round to capture the WBA "regular" super bantamweight title. Celestino Caballero is the super champion of the WBA because he also owns the IBF's version. The announcers called it one of greatest fights in Irish boxing history.
Dunne came out to a fast start in the early going and nearly put Cordoba away in the third after hurting him and putting him down. A bleeding Cordoba came back in the fifth, sending Dunne down twice and changing the direction of the fight. Dunne would fight his way back in and sent Cordoba down three times in the eleventh and ended the fight.
Cordoba was down for several minutes. Ringside doctors were treating Cordoba in the ring and he was taken out on a stretcher. The fight announcers said that he should be fine.
