As part of their pledge to reduce their amount of champions, the WBA has recently ordered several fights between their super champions, "regular" champions and interim champions.
BoxingScene.com recently spoke to WBA interim cruiserweight champion Yuniel "KO Doctor" Dorticos (21-0 20 KOs) to get his take on the situation. The Miami based Cuban fighter has been adamant that he has no problems facing the super champion Denis Lebedev (who also holds the IBF title) or the "regular" champion Beibut Shumenov.
With Lebedev opting to take care of his IBF mandatory obligation against Murat Gassiev in his next bout, Dorticos has been campaigning for a fight against Shumenov.
"The WBA ordered the fight between me and Shumenov to take place within 120 days from August 29 so he has to fight me this year. He has pretended like I don't exist, only talking about fighting Lebedev but now he has no where to hide. It is time for him to put his big boy pants on and face me, the KO Doctor!" revealed Dorticos and also added another interesting tidbit.
"The Lebedev-Gassiev winner will have to fight the winner of my fight with Shumenov. This is the way boxing is supposed to be. I applaud the WBA. The best will fight the best."
The rage inside of Dorticos is very evident. He feels disrespected by Shumenov and said that when they meet in the ring that he will make him pay for his actions.
"Let's be honest here. He keeps saying he wants to fight a super champ in Lebedev and this and that and that I fought nobody but really who has he fought? He fought a legend in (Bernard) Hopkins and look what happened - he lost - and then he fought BJ Flores when he should have fought me and everyone knows he lost that fight too but they gave him a gift.
"What I am going to do him is I am going to tear him up and eat him alive. I am going to finish him like dessert. At the end of the day I am going to do to him what I have done to everyone else - I am going to tear him up and destroy him.
"He better come in the ring with his big boy pants on. I am going to punish him just like the rest. In my eyes I am 21 and 0 with 21 KOs. The only person that I haven't KO'd is now a friend of mine and now he has a health issue because they didn't stop the fight when they should have. Shumenov is going to be number 22 to get KO'd," Dorticos told BoxingScene.com.
The Caribe Promotions promoted fighter wanted to make it clear that he comes in the ring to make a fan friendly fight and that the fans that haven't seen him will be very entertained with his fights. He said that he normally doesn't talk a lot but wants to make it crystal clear that he is willing to fight anyone and everyone.
"I am not one of these guys who talks to promote himself. I do my talking with my fists in the ring but I want to put on great shows for the fans. I want to be the greatest of this generation and be spectacular. I want to make a name for myself. I want to be Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman! I don't come in the ring to run around the ring like a chicken, like Shumenov does. I am going to make my legacy as one of the greatest boxers ever," Dorticos stated.
