WBO jr. flyweight champion Donnie Nietes has been the main bright spot for ALA Boxing Promotions as their sole bona fide world champion. Nietes also holds the record for being the Philippines' longest-tenured world champion in its boxing history when he was the WBO 105 lb. champion from 2007 all the way to the end of 2010, making three successful title defenses in Mexico along the way.
Lately, however, Nietes expressed some concern regarding how his career was being managed by his promoter. Nietes, who last fought in June 2nd and successfully defended his belt against Felipe Salguero at the Resorts World Hotel in Pasay City, Philippines, isn't too happy with the long periods of inactivity in-between his fights.
Nietes is not scheduled to fight anytime soon, and with ALA Promotions already filling up their upcoming Pinoy Pride cards, he may have to wait until 2013 to fight again. When Nietes was recently asked by our good friend Snow Badua of PTV Sports if he was happy with the way his career is going, the soft spoken fighting pride of Murcia, Negros Occidental said, "Of course not, January is still far away. I won't be fighting in a while, and that means I won't have any income."
But when asked if he had already talked to his promoters about his concerns, Nietes replied, "Not really. I just wait for them to tell me when to fight." For those who are not familiar with the Filipino culture, Filipinos are typically non-confrontational people, and would rather keep mum with their concerns than risk offending others. Such is Nietes' case.
Regardless, Nietes said he wants to fight more often, and that he is ready for big fights with the best names in his division. "That's what I wanted to do. I wanted to fight Roman Gonzalez, but I'm still going to wait on them (ALA Promotions) on when they want me to fight."
