The Philippines’ solidly built Dondon Sultan has won the vacant welterweight title of the WBF with a unanimous decision over rugged Eddie “Psycho” Delic of Australia in a fight promoted by John Leung at the Suntec International Convention Center in Singapore.
All three judges scored the fight for Sultan who claimed he had to overcome some rough tactics by Delic who won the Australian title from Paul Tapley last October 27 in Brisbane. Two judges had Sultan the winner 115-112 while the third judge had the Filipino winner by a wider margin of 117-113.
The 28 year old Sultan who is managed by well known boxing promoter and manager Sammy Gello-ani trained hard for the fight which, according to Gello-ani helped him win. Sultan improved to 14-7-2 with 7 knockouts while Delic dropped to 11-7-2 with 2 knockouts.
Delic was approved as a replacement by WBF president Mick Croucher after Nigerian Solomon Egberime injured himself while training for the rematch with Sultan who scored a stunning one-punch KO in the ninth round of a fight in which Egberime was well ahead on the judges scorecards in June 2004.
