According to IBF flyweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire, a clash between himself and WBO super-flyweight titlist Fernando Montiel is all but signed. Both are promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank.

"From what Bob Arum said [at the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar de la Hoya post-fight press conference], there's a plan in place for March with Montiel," says Donaire. The negotiations are still going on but both sides have agreed for this fight except for the signing and dealing. Other than that, we're ready to go."

Donaire, 20-1 (13 KO) of San Leandro, CA has made two defenses of the title he won when he knocked out Vic Darchinyan last July. His last performance, a sixth-round TKO over South African Moruti Mthalane last month, drew criticism from those expecting a more conclusive ending.

The Los Mochis, Mexico-native Montiel also fought in November, winning a ten-round decision win over Juan Alberto Rosa in a non-title bantamweight fight. His overall record is 38-2-1 (28 KO).

Donaire holds the 12-year veteran Montiel in high regards, offering praise while promising an entertaining affair.

"He's a good champion. He has power, speed and intelligence. He's been in the game for a long time and he's fought everyone. I have a lot of respect for the guy.

"I'm the newcomer with a lot to prove and I'm hungry. He's one of the guys who will keep me up there and help prove that I am an elite fighter. It will be a very good fight."

There was no spokesperson available for comment when a call was placed into Top Rank's office.
