IBF flyweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire (21-1, 14 KO’s) may fight Rafael "El Torito" Concepcion (13-3-1, 8 KO’s) for the vacant WBA super flyweight interim title at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Events Center in Las Vegas on August 15.
That’s the word from WBA vice president Gilberto Mendoza.
WBO No.1 ranked featherweight Bernabe Concepcion is also schedule to battle featherweight champion Steven Luevano on the same fight card of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.
Should the Donaire-Concepcion fight push through it would almost certainly mean a cancellation of the scheduled bout between Concepcion and undefeated Drian Francisco (17-0, 13 KO’s) for the WBA International super flyweight title at the Cuneta Astrodome on July 26.
Concepcion’s manager Damon de Berry of Optimum Sports Agency informed BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that Francisco’s promoter had "moved the date from July 26 to September 6 claiming that the Philippines Department of Health had advised against staging the show in July because of the AH1N1 virus."
De Berry told us he is now"searching out new opportunities" and had spoken to Top Rank but that no definite offer had been made as yet..
Concepcion is ranked No.3 by the WBA and Francisco No. 5.
Donaire has stressed his desire to move up in weight and has already relinquished the IBO flyweight title although he told BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that he would retain his IBF title for the moment.
In fact, IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker has directed Donaire’s handlers to enter into negotiations with the camp of No.1 ranked Moruti Mthalane of South Africa for a mandatory title defense.
Concepcion scored a stunning 10th round knockout over AJ "Bazooka" Banal at the Cebu Coliseum on July 26, 2008 but then retired in the 9th round of a bloody battle with Mexican warrior Jorge Arce in a WBA interim title fight.
Since then Concepcion has won two fights – a 2nd round TKO over Emerson Nesperusa on November 28 last year and an eight round unanimous decision over former world champion Kermin Guardia last February 3.
Donaire is coming off a smashing 4th round TKO over previously undefeated Raul "Cobra" Martinez at the famed Araneta Coliseum last April 19 in an IBF/IBO title defense in which Donare dropped Martinez twice in round one, once in round three and the for the fourth and final time in round four.
