At the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines, IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (21-1, 14KOs) stopped previously undefeated Raul Martinez (24-1, 14KOs) in four rounds to retain his title.
Martinez was an overmatched fighter and had no answers from the start. Donaire showed that he was too strong for Martinez by dropping him twice and nearly putting him away in the first round. Donaire punished him more in the second, dropping him and having him in all sorts of trouble by the sound of the bell.
In the third, Martinez took more punishment but was able to stay on his feet. During the fourth, an uppercut sent Martinez down again for the fourth time in the bout. The ref, Pete Podgorski, had seen enough and stopped the fight. Martinez appeared to be fine when he got to his feet but the ref felt that he was taking too much punishment.
