Philippine bantamweight champion Michael Domingo was knocked out by Frenchman Frederic Patrac in a WBF bantamweight title fight in the resort city of Agde, France yesterday.
The French champion who was fighting before his hometown fans at the Palais des Sports put on what boxing writer Wolfgang Schiffbauer described as “an excellent performance as he outfought and out-boxed Domingo but never seemed to hurt him.”
However, in the ninth round Patrac, the former European champion caught Domingo with a vicious combination out of nowhere and put down the game little Filipino for the full count.
Respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer of the famed ALA Gym said he had spoken to well-known promoter and manager Sammy Gello-ani who said Patrac “kept coming in like a windmill throwing punches and caught Domingo with a solid uppercut” to end the fight.
Aldeguer said Domingo’s failure to be aggressive and to “fight at his own pace and budget his time” was his downfall.
With his impressive win Patrac improved to 20-7-1 with 11 knockouts while Domingo dropped to 26-15-3 also with 11 KO’s.
Aldeguer said shortly after the WBF title fight Gello-ani, Domingo and trainer Edmund Villamor left for the airport for the flight back home.
