THE bout between young Filipino fighter BJ Dolorosa and local prospect Wilberth “Huracan” Uicab is elevated to a North American Boxing Federation (NABF) flyweight title fight in the “Mayan Challenge at Xcaret!” card in Cancun, Mexico tomorrow (Sunday in Manila).
During the 41st annual NABF convention in the scenic paradise resort, Thursday (Friday in Manila) at RIU Palace de las Americas, the organization approved the fight to become a 12-round affair with Uicab’s title on the line.
Dolorosa, a native of Cadiz City and fighting out of Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde Jr’s stable in Paranaque City, has no experience in a title bouts. But he mentioned Manny Pacquiao as his inspiration to win.
Dolorosa’s only experience against veteran fighters was against his stablemate Juanito Rubillar in sparring sessions at the Elorde Gym in Sucat, Paranaque and when they arrived in California on their way to Cancun on May 11.
Uicab is coming off in a five-fight winning streak and has fine record of 24-5-1 with 16 knockouts. He will put the title for second consecutive time.
Rubillar also sees action in the event. He will fight former WBC light flyweight champ Omar Niño Romero of Guadalajara in a rematch.
The scheduled 12-round contest between Rubillar and Nino Romero is classified as eliminator, like when they face in June 2008 in Mexico City where the multi-time title challenger from Mati, Davao Oriental came out victorious with a split decision.
Rubillar earned the right face WBC light flyweight king Edgar Sosa last November but lost with 7th round stoppage in front of hostile crowd also in the Mexican capital.
The winner in the rematch may face the survivor of another Filipino-Mexican eliminator bout between Sonny Boy Jaro of Rizal and local prospect Adrian “El Confesor” Hernandez, or directly challenge Sosa should the world champion delayed his plan to campaign in flyweight.
The Jaro-Hernandez contest will takes place at World Trade Center in Boca del Rio, Veracruz, Mexico on June 20.
