BoxingScene.com has been informed that WBC middleweight champion Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez may possibly avoid undergoing surgery to repair a right knee injury. The knee has been bothering Martinez for some time, but it was further aggravated during his decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on September 15th in Las Vegas.
Earlier today in Madrid, Martinez met with his doctor Angel Villamor. The physician said Martinez "has a ruptured medial meniscus in his right knee."
This coming Monday, Martinez will return to Villamor's office to have an MRI on his right after, and then the doctor will determine "whether his recovery will require having surgery."
If Martinez avoids having surgery, he may return to the ring earlier than expected. His handlers were targeting a date in May.
