Newly crowned WBO middleweight champion Dmitry Pirog (17-0, 14 KOs) continues his rest after a shock victory over American prodigy Daniel Jacobs (20-1, 17 KOs). Russian media ProFight contacted Pirog to know more about his present feelings and future plans.
“I want to continue fighting”, said the champion. “After my win over Jacobs I have suddenly realized that champion’s title isn’t exactly what I was dreaming of. Surely, titles and belts mean much and I’m content of having these attributes. But what is more important is a fine, masterful boxing. That’s exactly what I’m aiming at. I want to please fans with my abilities, with great, crowd-pleasing performances against top fighter in the world.
"Here’s an example. I have always praised Sugar Ray Leonard for his finesse and all-around fighting skills. I still can recall a number of his encounters – they were simply beautiful. But I have problem remembering which titles were at stake (if ever). That doesn’t really matter. I just liked to watch him fighting. The same is with me. I want to give fans what they want so that they will have their monies worth and will get only positive emotions observing my fights."
