Dmitriy "Star of David" Salita is without a promoter after having split with Dibella Entertainment earlier this week. That doesn't stop him from wanting to fight.
"I look forward to getting back in the ring sometime in mid to late February," said Salita, 27-0-1 (15 KO).
Just don't expect him to do so as a house fighter.
A press release sent out by Dibella Entertainment on Tuesday wrote that both parties "worked out an agreement by which Salita has received a release from his promotional contract."
Salita had spent three-years with the New York-based promotional group after splitting with Bob Arum's Top Rank. Salita declined to comment when asked for the cause of the dissolution, but later remarked, "Fighting in New York City on Broadway Boxing was great for me for a certain point and time. It gave me the opportunity to develop, fight good opposition, and strengthen my fan base in New York. Now I look forward to stepping up and proving that I am the best junior welterweight in the world."
Salita's run with Dibella was rocky at times. Salita scored wins over veterans Grover Wiley and Francisco Campos, but had to climb off the deck against Robert Frankel and Ramon Montano (twice) in the first round. Salita remembered his 2005 fight with Shawn Gallegos as his fondest with Dibella.
"The best moment was definitely walking into the ring with [reggae artist] Matisyahu, putting on a great performance and winning the NABA title. I will remember that for the rest of my life and the people that were at that fight have told me the same."
Salita pushed aside the prospect of enlisting with another promoter in the immediate future.
"We will see what happens and how things pan out. I will stay a free agent for a fight or two." Salita also reiterated desires of facing WBA Junior Welterweight titlist Gavin Rees.
The aforementioned presser added, "DiBella Entertainment wishes Dmitriy and Team Salita the best of luck in their future endeavors, both in and out of the ring." Salita's latest extra-boxing endeavor is a documentary on his career. Orthodox Stance, directed and produced by Jason Hutt, premieres at the New York Jewish Film Festival on January 10 through January 24.
Salita has been inactive since defeating Grover Wiley last March.
