BoxingScene.com has been advised that heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte will face Malcolm Tann on August 19th on the Terence Crawford-Julius Indongo undercard. Crawford and Indongo will have all 5 major belts on the line and the winner will become the undisputed champion in the super lightweight division.
The 29-year-old Whyte, who last fought in December when he edged out Dereck Chisora in a Fight of the Year candidate, was originally going to face faded former title contender Michael Grant. The same Grant many will remember faced Lennox Lewis 17 years ago. Those plans were scrapped when the fight received heavy scrutiny for being a mismatch.
Tann (24-5, 13 KOs) is a Phoenix, Arizona based 15 year pro who has faced the likes of Chris Arreola and Alexander Dimitrenko.
Whyte's promoter Eddie Hearn has spent the past few months trying to secure a big name opponent with no success. The UK based promoter made a substantial offer to WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder to cross the pond but was rebuffed as Wilder said that he would need an even bigger offer to defend his title on the challenger's home soil.
IN OTHER NEWS: BoxingScene.com has been advised that a pair of the promotional company's Northern California based prospects will return to the ring on August 12th in Fallon, Nevada. 17-year-old lightweight Gabriel Flores Jr. (2-0), who signed with Top Rank at 16 years of age, will return to the ring in a 4 round bout while middleweight prospect Quilisto "Quilo the Kid" Madera (6-0) will be back in a fight scheduled for 6 rounds. Both of their opponents are expected to be announced shortly.
Flores was a highly touted amateur prospect who is trained by is father Gabriel Flores Sr. The Stockton resident has won his first two professional bouts by knockout and won't turn 18 until next May.
The card is being promoted by Let's Get it on Promotions and headlined by Oscar Vasquez (10-1) against Javier Gallo (24-3-1) in a ten round flyweight bout. The fight card includes a total of 7 bouts and takes place at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.
