Manager Frank Espinoza has advised BoxingScene.com that lightweight contender Diego Magdaleno (27-1, 11KOs) has signed a three year extension with Top Rank. Magdaleno's contract had expired a few weeks ago and the two sides were hard at work to finalize a new deal.
Magdaleno has won four in a row since losing a twelve round split decision to then WBO super featherweight champion Roman Martinez in Macau, China.
Their target, says Espinoza, is a world title fight. Terence Crawford, who plans to move up to 140-pounds, will vacate the WBO's championship at 135-pounds. Espinoza would love to match Magdanelo, maybe against someone like a Juan Diaz, for the vacant belt.
"Diego, myself, and everyone at Espinoza Boxing Club are extremely pleased to continue the relationship with Top Rank. When the contract expired, we were completely focused on continuing this relationship and now we're looking forward to bigger things in the future. Diego has become more of a seasoned boxer since the fight with Martinez. Joel Diaz is an excellent trainer and he helped Diego correct a lot of mistakes. Diego is very motivated, he's hungry for a world title and I have no doubt that Top Rank will deliver a world title fight and I have doubt Diego will become a world champion in the near future," Espinoza told BoxingScene.com.
