BoxingScene.com has been advised that a welterweight clash between former two-division champion Devon Alexander and Aaron Martinez has been finalized for September 18th. The venue and television network will be announced shortly.
Alexander (26-3, 14KOs) last fought in December when he lost an unanimous decision to Amir Khan. Martinez last fought in June when he lost a split decision to the heavy favorited Robert Guerrero. Martinez (19-4-1, 4KOs) dropped the normally iron chinned Guerrero in the 4th round and many observers felt he did enough to win the fight.
Alexander was ordered to face Argentine puncher Diego Chaves in a final IBF welterweight title eliminator for the opportunity to face champion Kell Brook of Sheffield. But Alexander has decided to go in another direction and Chaves is now the frontrunner to face Brook in late October.
