A few days ago, British welterweight Denton Vassell (15-0, 8 KOs) told BoxingScene.com he was looking for the biggest win of his career, and a grand performance, on Friday night. He got both. Vassell won a twelve round unanimous decision over Lee Purdy (13-2-1, 7 KOs) to win the commonwealth title at the Robin Park Centre in Wigan, England. The scores were 117-112, 117-111, and 115-114.
Vassell was the busier fighter and more accurate with his puches in the twelve round contest. Purdy tried everything in his boxing arsenal to adapt to Vassell's angle-style punches. Purdy began to fade in the mid-rounds, but made a good account of himself with some strong combinations that shook Vassell in the late rounds.
