The former U.S. Olympian, Demetrius Andrade, who’s now 15-0, could return to the ring as soon as January in another step-up fight, his promoter, Joe DeGuardia, told Boxingscene on Saturday. Andrade, a product of Providence, R.I., who recently won an easy decision against the always dangerous Grady Brewer in August, is now rated in the Top 10 of the WBC at junior middleweight. DeGuardia believes that Andrade, an outstanding amateur who won the 2007 World Championships, is ready to take on the division’s champion, Saul Alvarez, right now, even though he has just 15 fights.
“We’re looking to step him up now,” DeGuardia said, as he was driving up to the Mohegan Sun for another edition of Star Boxing's Boxeo Azteca, featuring Heavyweight Mariusz Wach against Jason Gavern for the WBC Intercontinental Championship. “We’re looking for a big fight for him. I’m speaking to HBO and Showtime. We think he’s ready for a guy like “Canelo” [Saul Alvarez] right now. He has a lot of talent, and we’re looking to find the right big fight for him. I think he wins a title by the end of next year. The goal is to make him a star. That’s why he’s fighting so often.”
DeGuardia believes that Andrade has progressed as well as Floyd Mayweather Jr. has at this point in his career.
“I think the progress is pretty parallel,” DeGuardia noted.
Another one of DeGuardia’s young fighters, Raymond Serrano, a welterweight from Philly, who recently improved to 17-0 on Oct. 22 with a decision win over Angel Rios, will likely fight again on Dec. 10 for a regional title in Las Vegas as the main event of another Star Boxing Boxing’s Boxeo Azteca show.
