As reported a few days ago, the team of Felix Trinidad was approached by Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, to discuss a possible rematch with Oscar De La Hoya. Trinidad won a controversial twelve-round decision over De La Hoya in 1999. Promoter Don King plans to put pressure on Schaefer to make the fight. The fight, if it ever takes place, would happen December 6 on HBO pay-per-view, a date reserved by the network for De La Hoya's return.

"We are going to sit down with all of the members of the press in Puerto Rico and talk about what's going on. There will be no secret negotiations. Schaefer expressed to me that De La Hoya wants this fight as much as Trinidad. It would be the perfect match to close the careers of these two great fighters," King told Primera Hora.

For years De La Hoya has refused to go above 154-pounds to make the fight with Trinidad, who last fought at 170-pounds in January and barely made weight for that fight. Trinidad says he is physically unable to get down to even the middleweight limit of 160. According to Felix Trinidad Sr, father and trainer, the fight would have to happen at 165-pounds and the money would have to be a 50/50 split. Based on those terms, it unlikely the fight will happen any time soon.

"We are willing to agree to a 50/50 split, but regarding the weight, it has to 165-pounds, not a pound more and not a pound less. We are not going to negotiate through the press," Trinidad Sr. said.

The Trinidad talks are probably part of a backup plan in the case of Miguel Cotto losing his upcoming bout against Antonio Margarito on July 26.
