Ricky Hatton may have suffered his first loss at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. last weekend in Las Vegas, but another opportunity is in the works.
Prior to his bout with Mayweather, he was the frontrunner for a May showdown with De La Hoya, and according to some recent comments by Oscar, Hatton is still holding strong to that position. Hatton's camp was told, prior to the Mayweather bout, that if their fighter lost a "competitive fight," De La Hoya would still be willing to make the fight. De La Hoya felt Hatton made a good account of himself in the loss to Mayweather, leaving the door open for the May clash.
"The reason why it works with Hatton is because of his style. It would be a 'Clash of the Titans,'" De La Hoya told AFP. "Hatton gave it his all. He came to fight. It was a tremendous showing. I'm still in awe from his fans and how they support him. It was amazing."
Although Hatton is the frontrunner, other opponents like WBA welterweight champ Miguel Cotto are options as well. Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, says they will not rule Hatton out.
"If you have two of the most popular fighters in the world fight each other, it could be a great event. So I wouldn't rule it out," Schaefer said.
