If UFC superstar Conor McGregor decides to continue boxing, and calls for a showdown with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez - Canelo's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, will not even consider the idea of making that fight.
While at one time De La Hoya mentioned the idea of that contest, his mind is going in a different direction after watching McGregor make his professional boxing debut last Saturday night in Las Vegas, against 40-year-old Floyd Mayweather. McGregor started well, but faded as the fight played out and was stopped in the tenth round.
No, no I won't [consider making making Canelo-McGregor]. Not after what I saw, because it won't be a competition. I don't see a fight [if Canelo and McGregor face each other]. It's like I said - I respect the UFC, I respect the UFC fans for loving McGregor, for loving their athletes.. I really do. I just think that it's two totally different sports," De La Hoya told Chris Mannix of The Dan Patrick Show.
De La Hoya believes Canelo would demolish McGregor in one or two rounds.
"Of course [he would do that to McGregor], that's what Canelo does. He always delivers to you a great show. I just want to say to all of those fans who bought into the fight [between McGregor and Mayweather] - look I'm sorry for what happened, but at least you have something good to look forward to on September 16 [when Canelo faces Gennady Golovkin]," De La Hoya said.
If Canelo defeats Golovkin - the only defeat on the Mexican fighter's record came against Mayweather in 2013.
Would De La Hoya attempt to entice Mayweather to take part in a Canelo rematch?
""It all depends on what happens [in the fight]. My guy might get knocked out, he might blow Triple G out of the water. It might be a great fight [and they do a rematch]. I have to wait and see. Canelo wants to go after the very best at 160-pounds," De La Hoya said.
