Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar de la Hoya knows how to take advantage of opportunities when they arise.

As soon as Miguel Cotto dissolved his relationship with Roc Nation, the former world champions moved the chips in his direction with the intention of joining forces with the multiple Puerto Rican champion.

Although Cotto's best days are in the past, De la Hoya understands that the Puerto Rican superstar still has the ability and, in turn, the skills to be showcased in several significant fights before closing the book on his Hall of Fame career.

The first fight of Cotto's multi-fight agreement with Golden Boy will take place on August 26th.

Cotto will face Japanese contender Yoshihiro Kamegai for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior middleweight title in Los Angeles, California. It will be the first fight for Cotto since November 2015, when he lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

"Obviously, Cotto's fight with Canelo Alvarez was competitive, where he showed that he (Cotto) continues not only to possess the spirit and the love for the sport, but also the physical attributes. Cotto is strong and fast. I believe that Cotto has enough to continue giving to the sport. He can become a world champion again," De La Hoya told Carlos Gonzalez.

"Cotto is loved by many people in Puerto Rico and all over the world. Obviously he has to prove again that he has enough to represent his island in a strong manner."

It will not be the first time where Cotto and De La Hoya have worked together. In 2012, Cotto's fights with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout were co-promoted by Golden Boy.

De La Hoya is already making plans to stage a big fight for Cotto at the end of the year. A date of December 2 has been set aside.

"I think Cotto knows he has a lot to give and we're going to go on a fight by fight basis. There are many great opportunities for him. If everything goes well, obviously you never know, but the plans are to fight constantly to stay on top of the sport," De la Hoya said.

"Kamegai is a strong fighter and quite difficult. If Cotto wins in August the plans will be to find him a big fight for December, but nothing is certain."

Golden Boy has several possibilities for Cotto, including former world champion David Lemieux and even a rematch with Canelo.
