Former six-division champion Oscar De La Hoya, 34, made a decision to continue his career. According to an interview conducted by writer Dan Rafael , Golden Boy Promotion CEO Richard Schaefer revealed that De La Hoya will once again step inside the ring as a fighter, but don't expect a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
The first bout with Mayweather, which took place on May 5 and saw De La Hoya lose a split decision, was the highest grossing fight in the history of the sport, with a $19 million dollar gate, 2.15 pay-per-view buys and grossing over $150 million.
The buildup for the May 5 bout was so heavy that fans were disappointed with a fight that lacked the toe-to-toe action that both fighters promised, especially Mayweather. It's safe to say that very few fans would pay to see them fight again. Schaefer did not reveal any potential names to Rafael, only that Mayweather was not going to be in Oscar's future.
"Oscar told me he's not hanging them up, but we have not talked about who, when or where. But it won't be a rematch with Floyd Mayweather," Schaefer said. "Oscar's thoughts about a Mayweather rematch are 'Been there, done that.' Most people felt like it was a close fight and that Oscar came to fight. [Many] fans believe Oscar won the fight. He hasn't discussed who. He doesn't want to discuss any opponents right now. But when I said, 'What about the Mayweather rematch,' he said, 'No.' Oscar is not going to fight Mayweather again. "
Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's adviser, told Rafael there is another reason why De La Hoya will not stage a rematch with Floyd.
"The reason he doesn't want a rematch is because he can't beat Floyd. Fact is, he got his a-- whipped by a smaller guy. He'll never be able to whip Floyd, so, of course, he doesn't want to do it again. We respect it. We ain't mad at him. It's OK," Ellerbe said.
