Two weeks ago, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya and UFC President Dana White traded harsh words over their upcoming pay-per-view events - which are only three weeks apart.
Back in May, De La Hoya announced a finalized deal for the biggest fight in boxing - when Saul "Canelo" Alvarez challenges IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on September 16th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. HBO Pay-Per-View will distribute.
But last week, White and Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe announced that Floyd Mayweather Jr. would come out of retirement to face UFC superstar Conor McGregor in a boxing match. That fight also takes place at T-Mobile, but three weeks early on August 26th. Showtime Pay-Per-View will distribute.
Because Mayweather and McGregor are two of the most popular athletes in the world, their event is going to be a massive event - despite the actual fight being a huge mismatch on paper, mainly because McGregor has never had a single professional boxing match.
De La Hoya was not happy with the positioning of the Mayweather-McGregor date, because that event is obviously going affect the overall business of Cnaelo-Golovkin. Both pay-per-views should do very well, but Canelo-Golovkin would have likely did a lot better had there not been another major event taking place three weeks earlier at the same venue.
“It was disrespectful,” De La Hoya said to ESPN Sportscenter. “I would’ve thought that Dana White could have a little more respect with this (GGG vs. Canelo) taking place. You just don’t do that. It’s like having the Super Bowl and then three weeks later, the World Series takes place, the final game. It just doesn’t happen.”
“We have the whole year to stage these types of big events. They could’ve staged it in maybe November or December. It is what it is. We have a super fight here. We have a real fight and that’s exactly what we’re focusing on.”
