When Canelo Alvarez steps in the ring on Saturday night he will have faced Austin Trout, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara in succession. That is quite an impressive run for the 23-year-old Jalisciense.
Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya feels that Canelo's fights against Trout and Mayweather in particular have prepared him for the challenge that Lara presents. Trout is a southpaw like Lara and Mayweather is the pound-for-pound king who many feel has the best defense in the sport today.
"These are the type of fights that catapult you to a whole new level. What it does to your career, your confidence, your ability. It takes you to a place that you can't get to without those types of fights, Austin Trout, Mayweather. He is 23-years-old so he is growing and he is maturing. He is only getting better. With the star power that he has and the power that he has and the speed that he has - this kid is really going to go to places that no other fighter has gone," De La Hoya told BoxingScene.com.
