Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KOs) has the necessary qualities to become the best fighter in the world, pound-for-pound. At age 27, Mares has already captured titles in three weight divisions and beat a who's who of top fighters along the way. On Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California - he will make the first defense of his new title against former two division champion Jhonny Gonzalez.
"Mares has not reached his limit, I think he can be the best pound for pound fighter in the world. I have no doubt about that....his work, effort, the dedication he has. He can go so far, so in the very near future we will see Abner Mares as the world's best," De La Hoya said.
