Oscar De La Hoya and one of his prized boxers, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, had just finished holding court with a group of reporters inside the media center at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon. As the gathering broke up, De La Hoya was asked by a reporter from BoxingScene.com if he had a response to the unflattering comments made by rival promoter Bob Arum this week.
Arum said in a story by Michael Marley that appeared on BoxingScene.com that he doesn't see how De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions could be generating any revenue.
"The magazine (Ring) is bleeding money for them," Arum told Marley. "Their soccer team (Houston Dynamo) is doing terribly and costing them a fortune. And in boxing, what do they have with the oldest guys (meaning Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins) leaving? What do they have beyond those two?"
Arum did not say he had proof Golden Boy is struggling.
"Do I know the facts as to what they make or don't make?" Arum said. "Do I know this factually? No, I don't, but I have a good idea what they have spent and what they have brought in on pay-per-view. And I can't see how they are making any money, in my opinion."
When the subject of Arum's rant was broached Saturday, De La Hoya took a deep breath and looked toward the ceiling.
"My comment is ... my comment is ... I'm just not going to acknowledge him (Arum) anymore," said De La Hoya, who paused twice.
Just then, another reporter told De La Hoya, "That's probably best."
