The president of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, is confident the winner of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Jose Miguel Cotto will be in line for a title shot. A few days ago Cotto discussed his desire to fight for a major world title. A potential title shot is the biggest reason he took the fight against Alvarez at the welterweight limit. Cotto's best boxing weight is at 135 or 140.
"It's a big fight for both. I think whoever wins, either Cotto or 'Canelo', will be in line to fight for a world title. What 'Canelo' lacks, which is experience, Cotto has," said De La Hoya.
Cotto has the experience with only a single decision loss on his record to Juan Diaz from a few years ago. Alvarez has all of the physical advantages in power, size, height and reach. The 19-year-old prospect is looking for a title shot by next year. Alvarez vs. Cotto takes place on the Floyd Mayweather-Shane Mosley pay-per-view undercard on May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
