Two weeks ago, Oscar De La Hoya said a decision would soon come down on the status of his career. To date he is still pondering whether or not to return to the ring. After the nine rounds of punishment that De La Hoya's suffered at the hands of Manny Pacquiao last December, even his wife and close friend Richard Schaefer were calling for his retirement.
De La Hoya was very open when speaking to the Los Angeles Times about the Pacquiao loss, and admits he may have turned old in one fight.
"I feeling like a zombie" walking toward the ring against Pacquiao, and couldn't "throw one punch . . . maybe I just turned old overnight," De La Hoya said.
After the Pacquiao beating, De La Hoya went to the hospital where Schaefer begged him to hang up the gloves. Schaefer told him "no more punishment."
For weeks it was thought that De La Hoya might step in the ring for a final fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, but that was quickly passed up. Schaefer said Chavez was not a big enough opponent for Oscar. There are very few options for De La Hoya, but he won't commit, just yet, to calling it quits.
