On Monday it was revealed that Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena will play host to the biggest boxing event of the year - when two-division world champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) makes his official move to the middleweight division to challenge IBF/WBA/IBO/WBC Middleweight World Champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs)
The fight takes place on September 16th, during Mexican Independence Day weekend. The event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View.
This will be the third fight for Canelo at the T-Mobile. He knocked out Amir Khan at the venue last May, in what was the first ever boxing event at the new venue. And then he fought there last month, when he dominated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. over twelve rounds. Golovkin has never fought in Las Vegas.
When the bout was announced to take place at T-Mobile, Canelo vowed that he was going to prove to everyone that this was his era.
"I have repeatedly said that I fear no man, and I am now going to prove it by stepping into the ring against GGG. When the final bell rings, everyone will know that this is indeed the Canelo era, and that I am the best fighter in all of boxing," Canelo said.
Canelo's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, is fully backing his boxer to prove that he indeed owns this era - and he believes his boxer will do it by knockout.
"It's Canelo's era - and we feel very confident that our guy Canelo Alvarez is going to show up in the best shape of his career and with confidence. Look, I’m calling a knockout within ten rounds. This is the fight everyone wants to see and that they've been wanting to see for the last year and a half," said De La Hoya to ES News.
Golovkin last seen in action back in March, when he went the twelve round distance for the very first time in his career - winning a close unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Jacobs also snapped Golovkin's streak of 23 knockout victories.
