Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya has informed BoxingScene.com that 15,000 tickets were sold on the first day for upcoming HBO televised junior middleweight clash between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland, which takes place on May 9th from at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
A two city press tour was held on Tuesday, with stops in Houston and San Antonio. De La Hoya is expecting a sellout crowd. For his Marco 2013 unification with Austin Trout, nearly 40,000 fans packed the Alamodome in San Antonio. Minute Maid Park holds 40,950.
Tickets for the event were reasonably priced and started at $10 dollars.
"I just the first day, we sold 15,000 tickets for this fight. It's amazing. It is incredible. We are really excited. Kirkland is really motivated. He's been in the gym and this is the fight he's always wanted. He even took off his shirt and he looks good. He's a big kid, he's a strong kid. It's going to be an entertaining fight I'm telling you. It's going to be a fun fight to watch," De La Hoya told BoxingScene.com.
