Less than a week after
handlers for David Lemieux confirmed such talks
, the power punching middleweight has now officially signed with Golden Boy Promotions, BoxingScene.com learned Friday afternoon.
Terms were not revealed, but Lemeiux and his team are excited about what the future has in store.
"David has shown us that he is ready for the elite of the division," stated manager Camille Estephan, who has been in talks with Golden Boy from the moment
Lemieux was declared a free agent
. "I believe that with Golden Boy we will be placed in opportunities against these fighters."
The news comes right on time for Golden Boy Promotions, with the Los Angeles-based company in the process of rebuilding. News of Al Haymon forming his own boxing series on NBC and its affiliate networks resulted in a massive thinning of the herd in regards to the number of fighters performing on Golden Boy shows these days.
"David Lemieux is the ideal Golden Boy fighter -- a power puncher who is exciting for fans to watch and willing to take on anyone in the division," Golden Boy Owner and President Oscar de la Hoya said in a media statement. "As the calendar turns to 2015 and Golden Boy further focuses on delivering the fights that fans want to see, David Lemieux will fit right in with our stable of new fighters."
Lemieux (33-2, 31KOs) made his stateside and HBO debut in December, scoring a 10th round stoppage of Gabriel Rosado at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Canadian banger became an instant favorite with the network, who was interested in his services for quite some time. He also caught the eye of Golden Boy, the lead promoter for the show.
Negotiations began the moment it was confirmed that Lemieux opted to not renew his contract with Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM Promotions), whom had served as his promoter since his pro debut.
With Golden Boy now back in good graces with HBO, Lemieux adds to an already deep mix of middleweight fights to be made. Fighters who now perform under the HBO banner include: lineal middleweight king Miguel Cotto (though not under contract with the network); unbeaten middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin; and former 154 lb. champ Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
While his next fight has not yet been announced, the 26-year old from Montreal is anxious to get the ball rolling against the best that his backers can line up for him,
"I am very pleased and excited with my association with Golden Boy Promotions," said Lemieux. "I am ready to face the best and this is the mission that I give to Camille Estephan at Eye of the Tiger Management and Oscar De La Hoya and Eric Gomez at Golden Boy Promotions."
