Now that WBO/IBF heayweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is out of the picture for the next few months, David Haye is rolling the dice on trying to land a fight with WBC champion Vitali Klitschko in September. Rather than rolling the dice on a fight that has a 50% chance of happening, why not target WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev, who is available, in shape, and ready to fight. By the time Haye would step in the ring with Vitali in September, it would be nearly a year since his last fight [with Monte Barret last November].
Vitali still has an arbitration to take care of with the WBC, who want him to fight Oleg Maskaev next. If Vitali wins, most expect him to go after Chris Arreola. Two weeks ago, Valuev had his fight called off with Ruslan Chagaev [who now faces Wladimir on June 20] and I'm sure he would be ready to fight Haye on July 25, the earliest date that Haye's physician cleared him to fight.
Haye made a promise when he entered the heavyweight ranks - to clean it out. It wasn't that long ago that Haye called Valuev "that big hairy freak from Russia." Haye also said that would be able to knock Valuev out.
"These fat slobs who fight each other have made the heavyweight division a disgrace. I want to take over in the heavyweight division. I want to put heavyweight boxing back on the map. Heavyweight boxing is a joke right now. Nobody respects it. I will change the face of heavyweight boxing. I will be fighting legitimate opponents, guys in the top 10. I will no only beat them, I will obliterate them," Haye said.
I'm sure Haye remembers making all of those statements. Now it's time to back them up.
