London’s David Haye (27-2, 25 KOs) has announced that he will meet Arnold Gjergjaj (29-0, 21 early) at London’s O2 Arena on May 21 in the second comeback fight of what he hopes will be another successful stint in the sport.
The “Hayemaker” revealed his opponent at a press conference earlier on Wednesday, only to have to fend off a verbal onslaught from Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs, who gatecrashed the presser to call for a fight against Haye.
Briggs was dismissed by Haye, who queried whether he would pass the BBBoC’s stringent brain scan and receive a licence to box in the U.K.
His 31-year-old Kosovo-born, Switzerland-based opponent outpointed Denis Bakhtov to pick up the EBU-EU belt last year.
Gjergjaj is 29-0 (21KOs), but - despite his unbeaten record - has been slated by British boxing fans, who had hoped for better following Haye’s 1st-round knockout over Mark de Mori in his triumphant return to the sport this past January. The May 21 outing is just the second fight outside of his adopted homeland for Gjergjag, who beat Laszlo Toth by in Hungary back in November 2011.
Haye has held the cruiserweight world title as well as the WBA’s heavyweight belt. Persistent shoulder injuries forced him out of the sport, but he announced a comeback last year and wants to secure a meaningful fight.
Anthony Joshua has been mooted and with both men huge ticket sellers in their native London it could become a viable option should Joshua wrest the IBF belt from Charles Martin in their April 9 headliner, also at O2 Arena.
