David Haye couldn’t resist reveling in Tyson Fury’s misfortune.
After learning Wladimir Klitschko postponed his Oct. 24 fight against Fury on Friday after suffering a calf injury during training, the former heavyweight champion took to Twitter to take a shot at Fury.
Haye Tweeted: Seems Klitschko got hit with the “Fury injury curse” as well! Clearly The Boxing Gods don’t feel Fury deserves that retirement pay cheque!
Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) and Haye (26-2, 24 KOs) were supposed to meet in September 2013 in what would’ve been a huge fight in England, but the bout was postponed because Haye sustained a cut in sparring. It was rescheduled for February 2014, but Haye withdrew again due to shoulder surgery. The Haye-Fury fight was not rescheduled a third time, which forced Fury to pursue other opportunities that eventually earned him a shot at Ukraine’s Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs).
Haye, still just 34, hasn’t fought in more than three years. He told British media outlets in March that he’ll fight again, yet still doesn’t have a bout scheduled and said he won’t fight Fury because he doesn’t think Fury deserves the payday that would come from facing him.
Klitschko easily out-boxed the trash-talking Haye on his way to winning a 12-round unanimous decision in their forgettable July 2011 heavyweight championship unification fight in Hamburg, Germany.
Haye, a former WBA heavyweight title-holder, fought just once after losing to Klitschko. The ex-cruiserweight champ stopped England’s Dereck Chisora (21-5, 14 KOs) in the fifth round of a July 2012 fight in London.
Once the Haye fight failed to materialize, Fury fought Chisora a second time. Fury knocked out Chisora in the 10th round of their rematch last Nov. 29 in London.
