David Haye took aim at promoter Frank Warren over the weekend, ridiculing an offer made by Warren for a heavyweight bout with Matt Skelton. Haye plans to make the heavyweight division his permanent home in the fall and eyes former two-time heavyweight champ Hasim Rahman as the opponent. Rahman would first have to win his scheduled rematch with James Toney on July 16.
Haye stopped Warren's fighter, Enzo Maccarinelli, in two-rounds to unify the cruiserweight division in March. The Hayemaker says that he would "rather retire from boxing" than work with Warren again.
"I'll make at least double Warren's figure in my next fight," said Haye. "Skelton's the most boring heavyweight in the world. Thanks, but I'm not in boxing to hand out pensions. How much more charity are [Warren's promotional outfit] Sports Network willing to offer me?" said Haye, who has 21 wins from 22 fights.
"They already gift-wrapped Enzo Maccarinelli for me to obliterate in a couple of rounds and now they want to wheel out the company's granddad on his Stannah stair-lift for a beating. Frank Warren's obsessed with me. He should stop throwing me handouts and either donate the money to a more worthwhile charity or get his own house in order.
"We thank Frank Warren for sacrificing Maccarinelli, but we'd feel immense guilt if we took any more free money from Sports Network. I have a hard enough time sleeping at night as it is."
