Although Darren Sutherland died last year at age 27, the Irish boxer's contribution to the amateur game in his home country of Ireland is being commemorated with a memorial plaque in his hometown of Navan, County Meath. The local council unanimously voted in the proposal and Mayor Joe Riley said the decision was a reflection of Darren's achievements in his chosen sport.
“He is seen as part of Navan. He achieved a lot in his short life,” said Riley when announcing the decision to commemorate Darren’s life and career.
Sutherland won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics and was 4-0 (4 early) as a pro. His thumping jab, solid build and desire to learn had marked him out as one to watch for 2010.
